Biography:

Current Position
Chair, Department of Chemistry

Scholarly/Professional Highlights
Dr. Hansert is interested in the chemistry of reactive nitrogen-oxygen species with biological systems. This research has been published in several papers and he presented at regional and national meetings of the American Chemical Society. This semester Dr. Hansert is working with a student on a research project investigating the reactions of nitroxyl donors with phenols.

Dr. Hansert serves as the Missouri state representative for the Midwestern Association of Chemistry Teachers in Liberal Arts Colleges (MACTLAC).

Education
Dr. Hansert earned a Masters Degree and a Ph.D in Chemistry from the Alberts Ludwigs Universität Freiburg in Germany. His specialization is in the field of Organometallic Chemistry. After receiving his Ph.D, Dr. Hansert spent five years at the University of Wyoming as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the group of Dr. Scott Bohle investigating the biological chemistry of nitric oxide and peroxynitrite.

Background
Dr. Hansert joined Westminster College in the fall of 2002 to teach Organic, Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry. He introduced various laboratory experiments for General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry and developed a new course in Medicinal Chemistry. He has ongoing student research projects focusing on reactions of reactive nitrogen-oxygen species with simple organic molecules related to biological and medicinal systems.

Personal Information
Dr. Hansert's interests are collecting fossils and minerals. He enjoys travelling and various outdoor activities like camping, hiking, fishing, rock climbing and mountaineering.
