Music Minor

Why study Music at Westminster College?

Music at Westminster integrates applied performance, acquired knowledge in history and theory, and interpretive analysis within the academic liberal arts framework. Not only do music courses develop artistic expression and critical appreciation, but students enrolled in Westminster music courses also synthesize those skills throughout their college learning experience. Through private lessons, choral ensembles, and history, literature, and theory courses, students are challenged to communicate effectively, reason critically, solve problems, and to work collaboratively. Music courses are designed to develop the judgment, analytic capacity, and expressive integrity that will enable all students to act as purveyors and transmitters of the musical arts throughout their lives.

One-on-One Lessons

You may enroll in private voice, piano, and guitar lessons as well as participate in music ensembles; here you will build upon your skills and interests through study, rehearsal, and performance of diverse musical styles and genres. Private instruction is open to any student wishing to advance their musical proficiency. Each credit hour in private instruction includes a one-half hour lesson per week.

You sure can! While many Music Award recipients ultimately end up pursuing a Music Minor, any incoming student—freshman and transfer—may audition for either Churchill Singers or Rhythm & Blue Jays and be considered for a Music Award, too. To schedule an audition and be considered for an award, you should begin by completing this Music Questionnaire.

It does! During the senior year, those completing the Music Minor will enroll in MUS 301 A, B, or C. This is a two-credit hour one-on-one lesson with either the instructor of piano, voice, or guitar. In collaboration with the instructor, each student designs a cumulative project (recital, presentation, research paper, composition, or any combination thereof) to be presented during one’s final semester on campus.

As a Music Minor, you are expected to participate in either Churchill Singers or Rhythm & Blue Jays each semester you are on campus; it is certainly possible for you to be a part of both ensembles, too! Additionally, you will study either piano or guitar privately and also complete a semester of private voice. Most students completing the minor elect to register for private lessons each semester they are on campus, and we encourage you to take one semester each of piano, guitar, and voice!
