Global Sport: A Common Language in a Diverse World?
A dynamic group of speakers offered presentations and discussions on everything from sports injuries to film and sport to sports leadership to history and sports to race and sport and psychology of sports. The Churchill Institute provided the opportunity to explore a wide variety of global sports and focus on sport’s social, physiological, cultural, economic, political, and historical components.
Keynote Speaker
Roberto Clemente, Jr. discussed the legacy of his father Sr. Roberto Clemente. He and his family wrote together a book about forty years after his father’s death.
Plenary Speakers
Tori Murden McClure M.Div., J.D., M.F.A., President of Spalding University, Louisville, Kentucky, is an explorer and adventurer whose travels have taken her to Kenya, Antarctica, Mt. Rainer, as well as across an ocean. McClure was the first woman to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean, and her adventures are depicted in her memoir, A Pearl in the Storm (Harper, 2009).
Joshua Medcalf is the director of mental training for UCLA Women’s Basketball and the Oregon Ducks women’s golf program. He created the first mental training apps in the world for basketball, soccer, and golf. He also created, “Train to be CLUTCH,” through which he teaches the same life changing principles and stories all over the world.
Dave Zirin writes about the politics of sports for the Nation Magazine. Zirin is the author of seven books on the politics of sports. He is their first sports writer in 150 years of existence. He has been called “the best sportswriter in the United States,” by longtime New York Times sports columnist Robert Lipsyte

Phil Threatt, Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) at Columbia Sport & Spine Rehab in Columbia, Missouri and Adjunct Professor of Sports Medicine at William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri.
Kevin Garner has been involved in education for 25 years. He is the Assistant Executive Director for the Missouri State High School Activities Association and his responsibilities include the sports of basketball, soccer, as well as general eligibility and transfers. He is also an Adjunct Professor for the William Woods University MEA program.
Coach Tim Rulo teaches and coaches at South Callaway High School. He has interacted with hundreds of athletes and supports the idea that sport is one of the most powerful ways to impact a young person for the good of self, others, and community.
Dr. Lloyd H. Barrow, Professor of Learning, Teaching & Curriculum in the School of Education at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He has presented three times at the Baseball and Cultural Symposium at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.
Charlie James, Former professional baseball player with the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds. James was an outfielder on the 1964 Major League Baseball World Series champion Cardinals.
Henry Landry, Former Adjunct Professor of Asian Studies of Westminster College.
Howard Richards was a star offensive tackle and played from 1981-87 with the Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks. He participated in a study, sponsored by the NFL, examining the short- and long-term effects of repeated concussions. He is also the lead analyst for University of Missouri football broadcasts on the Learfield Network.
