Counseling Services

The life of a Westminster College student is not always easy. Sometimes our students feel overwhelmed with academic, career, relationship, family and other concerns. When stress and tension build, students frequently experience physical, emotional, social or spiritual distress. If you are feeling confused, overwhelmed, stressed, anxious or not even sure how you feel, you are not alone, over 75% of all Westminster students use our services sometime before they graduate. We want to help you, no matter what type of difficulty you are experiencing. We offer individual, group, and couples therapy in which students are seen by a licensed professional or a master/doctoral level practicum student under the direct supervision of a licensed professional.

To make an appointment call The Wellness Center at 573-592-5361, campus extension 5361 or drop by in the lower level of Westminster Hall. If you find that you cannot keep a scheduled appointment, it is your responsibility to contact The Wellness Center as soon as possible to cancel and/or reschedule. This gives us an opportunity to use the time for another student. In rare instances, if a counselor or health provider cannot keep a scheduled appointment, every effort will be made to contact you.
There is no additional charge for individual, couples, or group counseling. Occasionally, an educational workshop may have a nominal fee that covers some of the costs of materials and some tests or inventories and may have a small charge. We can work with students and possibly waive these fees if they are not feasible.
Our counseling staff makes confidentiality "both within and outside the college" a primary concern. Your utilization of our services will not be discussed with anyone outside of the Wellness Center without your permission, except in those rare instances where we are required by law or by a court order to reveal particular information. Record keeping (and on occasion, video recording with your consent) is done for the counselor's use in order to be of maximum help to you and/or to assure that you are getting the best care possible. Please feel free to discuss any questions you may have regarding our services or policies with your counselor or the executive director.
In the event of an emergency or if a student presents in crisis after business hours and/or when the Wellness Center is closed (i.e. holidays and summer), students, faculty, staff, parents, or concerned individuals can call campus security at 573-592-5555 to reach the counselor on-call. During the academic year, counselors rotate on-call and therefore someone is available to speak with you in crisis 24/7. During the summer hours, the Executive Director of The Wellness Center can also be reached by calling campus security.
